Listening to recent statements from some congressional Republicans, you might think that the 2010 health law allows the Internal Revenue Service to have access to your medical records.
Not so, says the Department of Health and Human Services. “The Affordable Care Act maintains strict privacy controls to safeguard personal information. The IRS will not have access to personal health information,” said agency spokeswoman Erin Shields Britt.

How will people with no bank accounts buy insurance on the exchanges?
May,20,2013
by:+Sarah Varney

When movie stars become unbankable, they’re no longer a slam dunk at the box office. When investments become unbankable, they’re relegated to the junk pile. For ordinary Americans deemed unbankable, those who don’t have a traditional checking or savings account, it can be hard to simply pay bills. And that is about to become a big problem for those who also lack health coverage -- and for the health insurance companies trying to sell them coverage. After all, how do you sell a product to a customer who has no way to pay you?

Senators seek overhaul of hospital payment system
May,16,2013
By:+ Rich Daly

When it comes to Medicare hospital payment systems, the exceptions are the rule. Congress' nonpartisan investigative arm reported Thursday that 91% of hospitals paid by Medicare receive some dispensation or add-on to the program's standard payment system.
The Inpatient Prospective Payment System was designed to maximize “cost-control, efficiency and access” when it was launched 30 years ago, according to the Government Accountability Office report. But Congress has piled an accumulating number of exemptions and carve-outs for various types of hospitals.

States' exchange outreach, education budgets differ greatly
May,17,2013
by+Dina Overland

Insurers should keep a watchful eye on their states' financial expenditures, as this may be the best indicator of whether they will enroll large amounts of new consumers shopping on the health insurance exchanges.
States are spending vastly different amounts of money to educate and promote the exchanges to their uninsured residents, many of whom are eligible to shop and sign up for health plans through the online marketplaces, according to a Kaiser Health News/Washington Post article

Employers Eye Bare-Bones Health Plans Under New Law
May,19,2013
by:+CHRISTOPHER WEAVER and ANNA WILDE MATHEWS

Employers are increasingly recognizing they may be able to avoid certain penalties under the federal health law by offering very limited plans that can lack key benefits such as hospital coverage.
Benefits advisers and insurance brokers—bucking a commonly held expectation that the law would broadly enrich benefits—are pitching these low-benefit plans around the country. They cover minimal requirements such as preventive services, but often little more. Some of the plans wouldn't cover surgery, X-rays or prenatal care at all. Others will be paired with limited packages to cover additional services, for instance, $100 a day for a hospital

Preventive health company bringing physicals on-site works toward a $1.5M raise
Mar,11,2013
By:+ Deanna Pogorelc

While many large employers are going the route of on-site health clinics to save on health costs and encourage employees to become more engaged in their health, there are options for companies that can’t commit to a full, on-site clinic. One of those options is providing on-site preventive exams to their employees, and one company facilitating that, Pathfinder Health, is apparently looking to grow as it’s well on its way to completing a $1.5 million equity offering, according to a recent regulatory filing.

Again, House votes to repeal reform law
May,16,2013
by:+Jessica Zigmond

For the third time since early 2011, the House of Representatives approved legislation to fully repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. In a vote of 229 to 195, the lower chamber approved the bill from Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), which has no chance of passing in the Senate. "Today is a sham. It's a waste of time," Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) told Modern Healthcare moments after the vote. "If we're to do something, we ought to be doing jobs. But this is a Circus here. This is Groundhog Day what happened here today."

How to Turn Your Best Customers Into a Growth Engine
May,16,2013
by+ John Jantsch

I’ve said repeatedly that building a vibrant community is the most important objective of any business these days. While this may sound like some social media laced feel good sentiment it’s actually quite practical.
Making your business customers, prospects, suppliers and partners feel like important members of a bigger community simply makes long-term business sense and is the key to long-term growth in ways that you not have even considered.
Many businesses get the idea treating customers in ways that make them want to return and refer, but you should also look at your best customers as collaboration partners able to help you formulate plans for growth.

Republicans: Sebelius needs to stop dialing for dollars to support exchanges

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An Obama administration effort to raise private donations to help implement President Barack Obama's healthcare reform law came under fire on Monday from congressional Republicans who claim the action could violate the law.
As the Republican-controlled House of Representatives prepared to mount a new vote this week to try to repeal the law, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton asked the administration to identify the companies and organizations that have received fundraising calls from Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

Patient Safety Experts Say Docs Should Be Tested for Drugs, Alcohol
May,14,2013
By:+Staff

To improve patient safety, hospitals should randomly test physicians for drug and alcohol use in much the same way other major industries in the United States do to protect their customers. The recommendation comes from two Johns Hopkins physicians and patient safety experts in a commentary published online in The Journal of the American Medical Association.
In addition, the experts say, medical institutions should take a cue from other high-risk industries, like airlines, railways and nuclear power plants, and mandate that doctors be tested for drug or alcohol impairment immediately following an unexpected patient death or other significant event.

Why the IRS Scandal Could Bring Down Obamacare
May,14,2013
by:+JOSH BOAK and ERIC PIANIN

The Internal Revenue Service’s scandalous targeting of Tea Party-themed and other conservative groups could severely damage President Obama – but it’s not necessarily because anyone close to the White House sanctioned the allegedly independent actions by the tax collection agency. In fact, the president was quick on Monday to condemn the actions exposed in an inspector general's report being released later this week.
The real fallout could be that it will impede Obamacare, which passed in 2010 under the official title of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

With health insurance exchanges opening for enrollment in only a few months, insurers are prepping their businesses to compete in a new business-to-consumer market. But it's not only the big insurers that hope to carve out a competitive edge as they bid for millions of new members through the online marketplaces.
Smaller insurers, like Network Health in Massachusetts, will be selling health plans on exchanges, competing right alongside the likes of UnitedHealth, Aetna, Cigna and WellPoint.

The initiative, the biggest expansion of Medicare since its creation in 1965, proved wildly popular. It now serves more than 35 million people, delivering critical medicines to patients who might otherwise be unable to afford them. Its price tag is far lower than expected.
