A pediatrician explains how to make patient engagement a partnership not a dictatorship
June,05,2013
by+Stephanie Baum

Many of the patient engagement discussions I hear tend to be focused on how to get patients to do what they’re told and how to get physicians to listen to their patients. So it was great to hear pediatrician Dr. Ivor Horn from Children’s National Medical Center bridge the gap in a panel discussion at the ENGAGE conference by talking about how she views engagement as a partnership.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services this spring released for public use huge batches of Medicare hospital inpatient and outpatient cost data to help consumers better compare hospital prices. Now comes a new effort to make the data more usable.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is sponsoring a $120,000 challenge to software developers to improve consumer understanding and use of all that data that shows a wide range of prices across more than 3,000 hospitals for 100 common inpatient procedures.

Mayo doc: Stop blaming patients. Healthcare industry’s take on non-compliance is all wrong
June,05,2013
by:+Deanna Pogorelc

Dr. Victor Montori used this image to illustrate what he, as a physician, sees as the biggest problem in healthcare.
It depicts a tactic that coal miners used to use to detect when dangerous gases were present in the air. When a canary sent into the mine stopped singing, they knew toxic gases had leaked into the mine.
In this Mayo Clinic doctor’s mind, patients are the canaries, and when they stop singing – or in this case, when they stop complying with what their doctors have recommended or stop going to the doctor to begin with — the healthcare system has become toxic.

7 Ways to Attract Lots of High Quality Links in the Age of Authority
Jun 3 2013
By:+John Jantsch

Links back to your site from other sites give Google a potentially important signal – “Hey, I’m a human being and I think this is good stuff.” – that’s something Google can’t do with a spider and even better if the site in question is already known to Google as a trusted source.
Links have always been important, but in the past it was just about getting lots of them. The “more is more” approach led to gaming and buying and other unnatural types of acts.

Juune,04,2013
by+Staff

On Monday, the House approved legislation (HR 1919) that would establish a nationwide system to track prescription drugs from manufacturers to pharmacies, The Hill's "Floor Action Blog" reports (Kasperowicz, "Floor Action Blog," The Hill, 6/3).
Details of Bill
The bill was authored by Reps. Bob Latta (R-Ohio) and Jim Matheson (D-Utah). It would require FDA to propose new rules by 2027 to keep consumers safe from the risks of counterfeit drugs. However, the bill -- called the "Safeguarding America's Pharmaceuticals Act of 2013" -- would not force regulators to finalize those rules.

Healthcare execs: We don't want to build software
June,04,2013
by:+Dan Bowman

Easing clinician processes often is a high priority when purchasing new IT tools, but it's not always one that comes to fruition, according to several healthcare technology executives who participated in a panel discussion Monday at the fourth annual Health Datapalooza in Washington, D.C., a conference originally launched as part of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services' Health Data Initiative.
Joe Kimura chief medical information officer for Boston-based Atrius Health, said that all too often he and his colleagues create custom applications as add-ons to purchased software to get the results they want

Wellness program final rule requires lower premiums for participants
May,31,2013

Insurers must offer members with employer-sponsored health insurance significantly lower premiums for participating in wellness programs--regardless of whether they actually improve their health.
In a final rule issued Wednesday by the U.S. Departments of Health & Human Services, Treasury and Labor, employer-based wellness programs must be structured so every participating employee can "receive the full amount of any reward or incentive, regardless of any health factor."

Patient engagement in the digital era
June,03,2013
by:+Staff

In the not-so-old days of medicine, patient engagement used to involve things like looking the patient in the eye when speaking to them, facing the patient, asking them how they felt, and asking them if they had any other questions before ending the visit. These so-called rules of engagement have now been augmented by the computer in between the patient and the provider.
No longer are the former etiquette protocols sufficient for interacting in the digital era. Now, patient engagement includes Internet searches using “Dr. Google” for what in my opinion are typically anxiety-fueled questions that are frequently unnecessary and irrelevant and would not have been asked prior to the arrival of Internet searches.

A message for docs: Embrace (don’t fear) online patient reviews
May,31,2013
By:+ Deanna Pogorelc

Sites where patients review and rate their physicians have in the past seemed to get a bad rap. But as patients look more at their healthcare choices the way they do at other purchases, the value of these sites, to some, is becoming increasingly clear.
Roys Laux, the general manager of the health and wellness division of service rating site Angie’s List, said the company entered the consumer review business 17 years ago, focusing on connecting consumers with quality home improvement service providers. About five years ago, its reviewers led the company into the health space. Now the site has listing for everything from physicians to dentists to plastic surgeons to healthcare insurers.

CIOs: Patient data segmentation will be one of HIPAA's biggest challenges
May,30,2013
by:+ Dan Bowman

Navigating the revamped HIPAA omnibus rule will be no minor feat for healthcare organizations, according to several hospital CIOs who spoke recently with the Wall Street Journal.
In particular, the CIOs talked about data segmentation as being among the most challenging aspects of the rule. Scott Joslyn, vice president and CIO at Orange County, Calif.-based MemorialCare Health System, discussed the impact of patients choosing to share only certain pieces of information with clinicians, saying that it could hinder a provider's ability to provide complete medical care for those patients.
