Patients get access to doctors' notes online in Milwaukee-area first

Cheryl Halverson, who was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago, took notes during her visits with Ranveer Nand, the oncologist who oversaw her treatment. She praised his skill in explaining the disease and his patience in answering her questions. Yet she still struggled to remember what she was told during those office visits.
"When you are sitting in that office," Halverson said, "so many emotions are running through you that you remember about half of what you're told. "That's why Halverson's response was "wow" when told of an initiative by Columbia St. Mary's that gives patients secure online access to the notes a doctor or clinician takes during an office visit.

Congressmen Introduce Bill to Roll Back Health Insurer Tax for Small Businesses and Families

A pair of congressmen who are also physicians, Ami Bera, M.D., D-Calif., and Charles Boustany, M.D., R-La., introduced a bipartisan bill late last month to make health care more affordable for working families, small businesses and seniors.
The Small Business and Family Relief Act would delay for two years the health insurance tax that is slated to begin next year as part of the Affordable Care Act.

Steadily and relentlessly, a feeling of anxiety spread among the four Pak sisters as they tried in vain to call their 80-year-old father, Song Pak.
"We were really starting to worry, because our mom was visiting us and he was alone," says Suzy Pak, 43, a financial consultant from San Francisco, whose siblings also live far from their childhood home near Santa Barbara. "Just before we called the police, he finally called us. He'd been gardening all day in the yard. So we decided we had to do something."
A few weeks ago, the sisters swooped into action and bought their father Lively, a $149 wireless monitoring kit whose six small accelerometers detect movement.

Can insurers really achieve better care at lower costs?
