Ryan Holmes: 3 Lessons I Learned from Raising $250 Million

Oct,15,2014
by: Staff

RYAN HOLMES: In September, my company closed $60 million in financing for a total of $250 million raised to date. That’s a sum I couldn’t have imagined when I started out. It has radically changed the course of my business, and it’s an opportunity I almost missed out on. I’ve been an entrepreneur for as long as I can remember. I started my first business — a paintball field — when I was still in high school using savings and love money from family and friends. In my 20s I financed a restaurant on my credit card and later opened a digital media agency that was always cash-flow positive. All along I was convinced that bootstrapping was the only way to go. Taking on debt or pursuing financing just weren’t options on my radar. Read More

The data behind engaging your team with social media
Oct,07,2014

Are Tablets Just as 'Mobile' as Smartphones?
Oct,01,2014
by:  Christopher Heine
Nearly three years ago, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg proclaimed that the "iPad's not mobile....It's a computer. That's a different thing." Since then, Apple's iPad and competitors such as the Amazon Kindle, Samsung Galaxy Tab and Microsoft Surface have sold millions of units while making the experience of seeing a tablet in public routine.
So, are tablets "mobile," or are they more akin to laptops, as Zuckerberg implied? Around the ad industry, opinions vary even years later, and sentiments are strong. Marketers like their terminology to be clearly defined, indeed, and many think smartphones and tablets are too different to lump together—which researchers do more often than not.  Read More

Lead Generation: How to build your own list

by: David Kirkpatrick
Last week’s MarketingSherpa B2B Newsletter case study — “Lead Generation: Content and email combine for high-quality list building” — covered an effort by cloud replication and disaster recovery startup company, CloudEndure. The overall basis of the campaign was a process created by CloudEndure’s Vice President of Marketing, Ramel Levin, before he joined the startup. This process Ramel called BYOL, or “build your own list.”The case study features some of the steps involved in Ramel’s lead gen idea, but since he developed it for a company he worked for before joining CloudEndure, the exact steps he took in putting the process together were not part of the case study.  Read More

How to Make Social Commerce More Appealing

Sept,26,2014
by: Staff
Social commerce isn’t new, and Twitter’s recent announcement of an in-tweet “buy” button is yet another effort to fuel customer purchases via social. But how many digital buyers in the US actually take the final leap on a social platform? Not too many, according to August 2014 polling by Harris Poll for DigitasLBi, which found that just 5% of US adult internet users had made a purchase on a social network such as Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest. Based on the research, better security measures could motivate social networkers to buy through a social platform. Fully 42% of users said they would be more likely to make a purchase via social if they knew their credit information was secure, while 38% said knowing their purchase wouldn’t be shared would increase their likelihood of completing such a transaction.  Read More

Getting The Work Done When You're Small
Sept,26,2014
by: THOMAS GOETZ
Almost by definition, startups start small. It's a classic formula for success: a small team with a big idea and everyone working hard to make something great. But in practice, a small team has its limits. Deciding what to do, and who does what, is harder than it sounds. The upside of a small team is that it creates a useful constraint. Limited manpower gives your team focus, forcing you to concentrate on must-haves rather than nice-to-haves. Amazon's Jeff Bezos calls this his two-pizza rule: Any team that needs more than two pizzas for dinner is too big. Bezos fears the groupthink inherent in large teams. Small teams not only avoid it but also make decisions more quickly, respond faster, and have tighter feedback loops. Read More

The company has grown so quickly because they’ve revolutionized the way employees find jobs and the way businesses network online. At the same time, they have cleverly monetized user data by giving recruiters access — for a price. Read More
