Community health centers brace for influx of newly insured

The nation's 9,000 community health center locations, serving some 22 million patients, are bracing for an influx of patients in the 26 states that have expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Roughly 10,000 physicians make up about 60% of the community center clinical workforce; their work is supplemented by about 6,000 nurse practitioners and physician assistants, noted Dan Hawkins, policy director for the National Association of Community Health Centers. He is not sure if this will be enough for what he expects will be increased demand for services.

Illinois hospitals cite impact on jobs, economy

Illinois' nearly 50 health systems and more than 200 hospitals contribute $83.4 billion annually to the state's economy, according to a report issued this week by the Illinois Hospital Association. Looking at their financial health however, 39% of Illinois hospitals operated in the red over the last two years, the report noted.
Medicare and Medicaid payment cuts have contributed to Illinois hospitals' financial challenges. Since 2011, the state has seen more than $380 million in Medicaid reductions, while in the past decade, Medicare payments have dropped by about $11 billion.
