So many healthcare entrepreneurs have a story to share about a sick grandparent and how their recent experiences alerted them to certain shortcomings in the healthcare system. And although these epiphanies frequently produce good ideas for so many digital innovations everything from remote monitoring devices to patient engagement tools, the amount of time given over to how each person in will use the device was designed seems to vary. At the same time, everyone recognizes that the number of people in and approaching retirement is substantial. By 2015, people aged 50 and older will make up 45 percent of the population.

Wired witnesses helped feds in Sacred Heart case

by:+Joe Carlson

Federal authorities say they were compelled to work behind the scenes in February to prevent a patient from getting a tracheotomy he didn't need at a Chicago hospital under investigation for Medicare fraud.
The government then rushed to build a case against the executives and physicians allegedly orchestrating the scheme in order to protect other patients from harm, U.S. Attorney Gary Shapiro said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
Shapiro spoke hours after federal agents arrested the hospital's owner and executed sweeping search warrants at several locations looking for documentation of a pattern of doctors referring elderly and indigent patients to Sacred Heart for unneeded but profitable emergency room care and procedures such as tracheotomies, intubations and heavy sedation.

Technology Aided Info Sharing After Boston Marathon Bombings
Apr,16,2013
by:+Staff

Technology helped facilitate communication after two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, FierceHealthIT reports.
How Twitter Helped
Several emergency response teams and medical organizations used Twitter to provide information to the public following the bombings. For example:
The Boston Police Department sent tweets informing followers that officers were working to stabilize the situation;
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Association sent tweets advising concerned individuals to try texting friends and family members in Boston because text messages use less bandwidth than calling;
Tufts Medical Center used Twitter to provide updates on its patient count and to inform potential patients that anyone needing care should use the facility's emergency entrance (Bowman, FierceHealthIT, 4/15).
