Telemedicine going mainstream amid ACOs

With the Affordable Care Act making physician payments more outcomes-focused, some experts predict that telemedicine and Web-based visits will become a more integral part of how physician offices care for patients.
To test this notion, the Mayo Clinic is currently piloting video visits and will decide later this year whether it's practical and beneficial to expand it, Bob Walters, chair, department of regional practices, Mayo Clinic Florida in Jacksonville, told the Republic.

For a peek into the future of population health management, a visit to Stanford Coordinated Care, a new clinic in northern California that is part of Stanford Health System, is in order. Staffed with three part-time physicians, one nurse and a handful of medical assistants, the clinic targets a select group of patients that health care cost accountants might just as soon send elsewhere. "We are recruiting the top 10 percent of the riskiest patients," says the clinic's co-director, Ann Lindsay, M.D. "Our patients usually have several conditions."

Reform Update: Medicaid, CHIP could gain 18 million more enrollees if all states expanded programs, study says

While a new report estimates millions of people could be added to Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program if all states expanded these programs as allowed under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a number of states have refused to expand their programs or cut their existing programs, leaving thousands of their residents without coverage.
The study conducted by the Kaiser Foundation and the Urban Institute estimated 18 million people could be added to the programs, and that the rate of uninsured in each state would fall below 15% if the ACA's Medicaid were fully implemented in all states. Hospital leaders are in the forefront of pushing resistant states to expand Medicaid.
