Hospital shares up on signs of big demand for Obamacare insurance

(Reuters) - Shares of hospital operators rose on Thursday on a strong show of interest in newly launched insurance plans under President Barack Obama's healthcare law, raising hopes that millions more Americans would become paying customers next year.
One of the biggest issues traditionally pressuring the profits of hospital chains has been the debt incurred by treating vast numbers of uninsured patients using emergency rooms for primary care and then being unable to pay their bills.

Sharp HealthCare checks out kiosks for check-in

What if checking into the doctor's office was as easy as checking in for a flight or buying movie tickets at a self-serve kiosk? San Diego, Calif.-based Sharp HealthCare, answered that question by implementing electronic check-in at three of its clinics. "We feel this is another avenue to maintain and increase patient satisfaction goals," Michelle Calleran, director of IT for Sharp, told FierceHealthIT in an interview. A second goal was to improve staff satisfaction, add another area of support, help their workloads and improve their job performance. It helps with physician satisfaction, too, she said. "It really does align with those values."

Insurers take exchange marketing, education into own hands

Despite the Obama administration's effort to highlight the wide popularity of health insurance exchanges, very few consumers actually know the online marketplaces opened only two days ago.
A recent survey from Kaiser Family Foundation found most consumers, particularly those without health coverage, were unaware exchanges were opening on Tuesday. Of the 1,503 adults polled before open enrollment began, 66 percent didn't know when the marketplaces opened.
