Forty-one percent of U.S. consumers would consider changing health care providers to be able to access their electronic health records online, according to a new survey from Accenture, Becker's Hospital Review reports (Gregg, Becker's Hospital Review, 9/16).
Harris Interactive conducted the online survey for Accenture. In July, researchers polled 9,015 adults age 18 and older from nine countries, including about 1,000 U.S. residents (Monegain, Healthcare IT News, 9/16)

Elizabeth D’Alesio has 10 new patients. She prescribes their medications, orders their labs, performs diagnostic testing and provides wellness advice.
But D’Alesio isn’t a doctor. She’s a nurse practitioner who, thanks to a law passed last year, was allowed to open her own practice in Hopedale to provide primary care services last month.
D’Alesio, who is certified in critical care, adult and women’s health, has been working as a nurse practitioner for more than 20 years and felt now was the time to strike out on her own and fill a need for local patients.

Researchers surveyed 310 people who opted out of Facebook by participating in the (online!) QuitFacebookDay.com campaign begun by users angry over the company’s privacy policies. “To paraphrase Mark Twain, the reports of the death of private practice medicine have been greatly exaggerated,” Dr. Ardis Dee Hoven, president of the American Medical Association, said in a news release touting the findings of a recent survey that indicates how the trend toward hospital employment of physicians may be overstated. According to the AMA's new Physician Practice Benchmark Survey (PDF), 53.2% of physicians were self-employed in 2012, 41.8% were employed and 5% were independent contractors.

HHS launches site to help providers engage patients

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services this morning launched a new website aimed at aiding providers in their efforts to engage patients in determining the best way to share their electronic information.
The site, called the Meaningful Consent site, provides "strategies and tools" to providers, including background information and lessons learned by other providers. It is based on 2011 recommendations made by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT's HIT Policy Committee.
