What 4 years of editing SmartBrief on Social Media taught me about social media marketing
July,26,2013
by+Jesse Stanchak

Today is my last day at SmartBrief. I’ve been editing this blog, along with the SmartBrief on Social Media newsletter, since the summer of 2009. During that time, I’ve read countless news articles, reports, case studies and opinion pieces about every major development along social media’s path from business oddity to business essential. I’ve also spent a lot of time talking to readers, both online and off, about their successes and challenges in putting social tools to work. I won’t pretend I know everything there is to know about social media marketing. Anyone who says they do is not to be trusted, especially if they have a goofy job title.

Giving Patients a Role in Data Exchange
July,10,2013
by+ Joseph Goedert

The pilot, being done under the umbrella of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, is designed to add transparency to the process of exchanging patient data. Providers have repositories within their electronic health records systems that can include signed patient consent directives for the use of their information, and the directives can be reviewed to determine what information to send. But these are closed information systems and patients usually do not know who has requested their information, what was sent and what was seen.

Study: Research methods for home telemonitoring lack quality
July,24,2013
by:+Susan B. Hall

Despite the promise of remote patient monitoring to cut healthcare costs and improve patient care, the research methods behind those claims are called into question in a study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research this week.
The researchers looked at systematic reviews and meta-analyses of home telemonitoring of patients with chronic conditions between 1966 and 2012. They focused on 24 reviews, nine of which were meta-analyses. Most such studies over the years deal with remote monitoring for patients with chronic heart failure, but in recent years, monitoring has grown more prevalent for other conditions, as well, such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma

Physicians Practice
What May be to Blame When Medical Practice Staff Lacks Initiative
July,24,2013
by:+Carol Stryker

Physicians often complain that staff shows no initiative and is operationally passive: "They won't do anything without specific instructions, every time." Office productivity and morale benefit from understanding a likely cause of this behavior that many physicians encounter.
Learned helplessness occurs when a person repeatedly encounters a negative event he can neither influence nor avoid. He will eventually learn that he is powerless in the situation and stop wasting energy trying to avoid the discomfort. Passivity is the conditioned response.

Social media, web queries not ready as disease surveillance tools
Jult,22,2013
by:+Ashley Gold

A new study in the Journal of Medical Internet Research chronicles the evolution of using social media/Internet queries for disease surveillance, finding that "while their accuracy, speed, and cost compare favorably with existing surveillance systems, the primary challenge is to refine the data signal by reducing surrounding noise." The study calls for further developments in digital disease surveillance, which will have the potential to improve "sensitivity and specificity."

HCSC's 'social marketing marathon' educates consumers about exchanges
July,21,2013
By:+Dina Overland

Health Care Services Corporation (HCSC) is taking matters into its own hands. Deciding not to rely on federal or state governments to inform and educate the public about the health insurance exchanges, it launched its own advertising campaign particularly aimed at the uninsured population in the four states where it operates Blue Cross Blue Shield plans--Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
At the core of the "Be Covered" campaign, which began in March, is almost 200 partner organizations enabling HCSC to have its finger on the pulse of the uninsured community.

Why young social media workers are all tactics, no strategy
July,19,2013
by+Gerald C. Kane

Many companies turn to interns or freshly-minted college students to staff their social media efforts. But that’s a risk: because these inexperienced employees are not well versed in their new company’s organizational culture or strategy, it is often difficult for them to meet organizational objectives with social media initiatives.
More dangerous, younger employees don’t know what they don’t know, which can be a recipe for disaster when companies hand these rookies a social media megaphone to speak on behalf of their company.

How to Get a Customer Referral
July,16,2013
by:+Geoffrey James

To get referrals that turn into new customers you've got ask the right way at the right time. Hundreds of "how to" sales books (and the sales trainers who write them) advise sellers to always ask for a referral after you close a sale, like so:
"Thank you for buying! Do you know anyone else who can use our product?" Unfortunately, this type of request almost never results in a useful referral because it's asking for the wrong thing, in the wrong way, and at the wrong time. Here's a better way:

mHealth seen as solution to medical malpractice epidemic
July,15,2013
by+Greg Slabodkin

One can add reduced medical malpractice cases to the list of potential benefits to society from widespread mHealth adoption, so says Zachary Landman, MD, chief medical officer for Doctorbase, a developer of mobile health solutions, patient portals and patient engagement software. Landman believes that mHealth can reduce the "suffocating" costs of malpractice that plague our healthcare and legal systems. He argues that "whereas email and 'EHR messaging' feels and acts impersonal, takes considerable time and forces physicians to be stationary (more difficult than it sounds), mobile messaging is in real-time and emulates a conversation." In addition, "mobile messages tend to be sent quicker and are less proofread, less polished and more personal," according to Landman.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - In a preliminary study of patients who had simple surgeries, most did well and seemed satisfied with post-operative checkups by telephone instead of seeing their surgeon in a clinic visit.
The phone follow-up saved doctors and patients the time and effort involved in clinic visits without compromising patient care, according to the study of California patients.

By:+ RONI CARYN RABIN and REED ABELSON

Individuals buying health insurance on their own will see their premiums tumble next year in New York State as changes under the federal health care law take effect, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced on Wednesday
State insurance regulators say they have approved rates for 2014 that are at least 50 percent lower on average than those currently available in New York. Beginning in October, individuals in New York City who now pay $1,000 a month or more for coverage will be able to shop for health insurance for as little as $308 monthly. With federal subsidies, the cost will be even lower

Insurer slow to close debate on masking personal health info
July,16,2013
by:+Ashley Gold

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina periodically does something that just may be concerning to its customers: it shares their personal health information with a third-party company employed to design the company's software, according to documents and interviews compiled by the Charlotte News-Observer.
In the article, it is explained how the internal documents show a discussion within the 3.7 million member Blue Cross of NC, deciding whether to scramble or mask the data--which includes names, addresses, Social Security numbers and medical information--before it goes to the third party. So far, the payer is not doing that.
