As physician practices become more comfortable in the social media sphere, their go-to preference for social media tools to attract patients is changing, according to a Digital Doctor survey initiated by ZocDoc.
Facebook topped the list with half of the 360 respondents saying they had a Facebook page to attract clients. Another 34 percent are using Google+ For the uninitiated, it’s like a picture and video heavy version of Facebook. LinkedIn comes in third with 28 percent of doctors saying they had a presence on it. That’s probably a place where patients would go to check on their physicians experience level.

Online PHR helps parents stay on schedule with well-baby visits

Parents who logged onto their child's integrated personal health record at least once were more likely to adhere to the recommended schedule for six well-baby visits by 15 months of age, according to a Kaiser Permanente study.
The research, published in the Journal of Pediatrics, involved a review of data for 7,000 children under 2 who were enrolled in Kaiser Permanente health plans in the Hawaii and Northwest. In the Northwest, parents who used the online tool at least once were 2.5 times more likely to keep the six appointments; in Hawaii, they were twice as likely.

Physician Practices Cast a Wary Eye at Insurance Exchanges

A large survey from the Medical Group Management Association finds many physician practices are decidedly cool toward health insurance exchanges now live under the Affordable Care Act.
“At least initially, physician practices are taking a cautious approach with ACA exchanges,” says Susan Turney, M.D., president and CEO of the association. “Because it’s unclear how many patients will sign up for exchanges in their area, or if practices will even contract to provide care under new exchange insurance products, at this time they can only speculate about their future business needs in relation to the ACA.”

The technical glitches plaguing federal-run health insurance exchanges have caused insurers to receive faulty or incomplete information. To rectify some of the problems, insurers have taken to fix errors by hand.
In some cases, insurers have received electronic files they can't open or are unusable because they're missing so much information on new enrollees. The flawed or partial data means some consumers might not actually be covered even if they sign up for a health plan, reported Bloomberg.

While we first turned to Shankman for insight on personal branding (great interview, I recommend watching), it turns out his understanding of customer service is just as perceptive. According to Shankman’s research, 80% of businesses believe they deliver “superior” customer service. In reality, only 8% of customers have experienced superior service from those same companies. Now, there is no question that great customer service is essential to a successful business, but the question is, is social media the way to get it?

The glitch-ridden rollout of President Barack Obama's healthcare law has opponents crowing: "Told you so!" and insisting it should be paused, if not scrapped.But others, including insurance companies, say there's still enough time to fix the online enrollment system before uninsured Americans start getting coverage on Jan. 1.
After emergency repairs over the weekend, consumers in different parts of the country Monday continued to report delays on healthcare.gov, as well as problems setting up security questions for their accounts. The administration says the site's crowded electronic "waiting room" is thinning out. Still, officials announced it would be down again for a few hours starting at 1 a.m. Tuesday for more upgrades and fixes.

What if checking into the doctor's office was as easy as checking in for a flight or buying movie tickets at a self-serve kiosk? San Diego, Calif.-based Sharp HealthCare, answered that question by implementing electronic check-in at three of its clinics. "We feel this is another avenue to maintain and increase patient satisfaction goals," Michelle Calleran, director of IT for Sharp, told FierceHealthIT in an interview. A second goal was to improve staff satisfaction, add another area of support, help their workloads and improve their job performance. It helps with physician satisfaction, too, she said. "It really does align with those values."

Insurers take exchange marketing, education into own hands

Despite the Obama administration's effort to highlight the wide popularity of health insurance exchanges, very few consumers actually know the online marketplaces opened only two days ago.
A recent survey from Kaiser Family Foundation found most consumers, particularly those without health coverage, were unaware exchanges were opening on Tuesday. Of the 1,503 adults polled before open enrollment began, 66 percent didn't know when the marketplaces opened.
