How Chicago's top hospitals really make money
Feb,03,2014
by:+Andrew L. Wang

Thanks to 2013's sizzling stock market, Chicago-area hospitals are reaping outsize investment returns, providing a crucial source of income as health care's tough economics make it harder for them to turn a profit. Among the biggest winners: Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, Advocate Health Care and NorthShore University HealthSystem. Each took home nine-figure gains last year, empowering them to afford expansions and acquisitions. In fact, Northwestern's $309.1 million haul from investments nearly matched the $312.4 million in operating income that the Streeterville-based organization generated from running its two hospitals and other facilities in the year ended Aug. 31.

CMS: Medicare & Medicaid ACOs are Saving Money
Jan31,2014
by:+Joseph Goedert

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says its Medicare and Pioneer accountable care organization initiatives have saved more than $380 million. However, participants doing well are a distinct minority.
In the first 12 months of the Medicare Shared Savings Program, 54 of 114 ACOs had lower expenditures than anticipated. Twenty-nine of the 54 ACOs generated shared savings of more than $126 million while generating $128 million in net savings to Medicare Trust Funds, based on interim results, with final results expected later in 2014. Interim results are currently within the range projected for the first year, according to CMS.

Telehealth continues to surge in popularity despite flaws
Jan31,2014
by:+Ashley Gold

Telehealth saves money and trips to the doctor's office, but can it also be a case of "too many chefs in the kitchen?"That's what Chetan Mukudan, M.D., of Nashville's Heritage Pediatrics, says, according to an article in The Tenessean. Telehealth services can result in a fragmentation of care where one medical professional is unaware what the other is doing, he says, especially in cases where telehealth replaces a trip to the pediatrician.

Surprise! A Desktop PC May Be a Better Investment Than a Laptop
Jan,29,2014
by+Bill Snyder

Here’s a product you don’t hear much about anymore: the desktop PC. Yawn, right? Although the big, boring, and boxy device may seem as dead as the VCR, don’t be so quick to give it a thumbs-down. Any technology you buy for your small business should be justified by its potential return on investment and not its “coolness” factor.

Jan,30,2014
by:+Jim Connolly

If you have been struggling to get the results you want from your business, this marketing tip could be just what you’re looking for. As you may have already discovered, the marketplace doesn’t really care about what you want.Your family cares. Your friends care. I care… however, the marketplace cares about what it wants — not what you want. So, how do you get what you want from your business?
It works like this: You can get whatever it is you want, providing you look at things a little differently. Instead of focusing on how your business will generate the revenues or profits you want, you need to focus on what the marketplace wants. You then align what the marketplace wants, with what you want.

Reform Update: Analysis finds disparities in success of states' exchange signups
Jan,27,2014
by+ Paul Demko

Significant disparities are developing in states' success at signing up individuals for coverage through the state and federal exchanges, according to a new analysis, and the gaps don't consistently reflect which states have embraced or opposed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
During the initial 15 weeks of the open-enrollment period, just 3% of those eligible to purchase coverage in Mississippi signed up for a plan. By contrast, 54% of those eligible to buy private coverage in Vermont purchased insurance, according to a new analysis of enrollments by the McKinsey Center for U.S. Health System Reform.

Will State SHOPs Regain Footing After Stumbles?
Jan,29,2014
by:+ BRUCE SHUTAN

The Small Business Health Options Program is still very much a work in progress – or widely expected disappointment, depending on who is commenting. Such is the case even on a state level where operations enjoy a competitive leg up on the federally facilitated model.
Several state-run exchanges have faced their own share of travails, with The New York Times recently citing trouble in California, Idaho, Maryland, Mississippi, Oregon and Washington State. Moreover, paltry enrollment numbers have been reported among small businesses since Jan. 1 in New Mexico (44), Colorado (101), Kentucky (14) and Connecticut (106).

Jan,25,2014
by:+Melanie Evans

Illinois plans to ask the CMS for permission to spend $60 million in Medicaid funding to help vulnerable enrollees find and maintain stable housing.
With the waiver, Illinois would join New York and counties in Minnesota and California in recent efforts to add housing to the list of healthcare services offered to chronically ill Medicaid patients.
