A program for sick Americans who were previously denied insurance coverage has been further extended, with individuals now given until the end of June to purchase coverage. The Pre-Existing Conditions Insurance Plan was originally set to expire on Dec. 31, 2013 and has been extended monthly since.
The Affordable Care Act prohibits insurers from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. Congressional Democrats included the federal high-risk pool in the law as an immediate stop-gap program for people who had been denied coverage by insurers and couldn’t wait four years for medical underwriting to be outlawed.

The list is based on the institute’s database of patient safety events voluntarily submitted by provider facilities, as well as custom research requests and root-cause analyses submitted to ECRI.

Survey: 90% of people will share health data, 26% don’t care about privacy

A new survey suggests that consumers are getting more open-minded about sharing their personal health data. A whopping 90 percent of the 1,000 respondents to the Makovsky Health/Kelton Survey said they would have no problem sharing their healthcare data so long as the goal is to help researchers understand a disease or improve care or treatment options.

ATA: State policies hinder telemedicine

The American Telemedicine Association has suggested some changes to the Federation of State Medical Board's (FSMB) proposed regulation of telemedicine. Among the suggestions: Don't make remote consults more cumbersome than in-person treatment and clear the way for docs to practice across state lines.
Of the changes it seeks in the FSMB's "Model Policy for the Appropriate Use of Telemedicine Technologies in the Practice of Medicine," ATA said in an announcement:
