May,13,2013
by+Internicola, Dorene

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Baby boomers, the generation that vowed to stay forever young, are getting older, designing senior-friendly gyms and becoming their own personal trainers.
In exercise havens for the over-50 set, the cardio machines are typically low impact, the resistance training is mainly air-powered and some group fitness classes are taken sitting down.
At Welcyon gyms, founded by husband-and-wife boomers Suzy and Tom Boerboom, the average age of members is 62. "The environment is really designed for those 50 and over," said Suzy Boerboom.

Big insurers, watch out: The little guy is entering the exchange market
May,10,2013
by:+Dina Overland

With health insurance exchanges opening for enrollment in only a few months, insurers are prepping their businesses to compete in a new business-to-consumer market. But it's not only the big insurers that hope to carve out a competitive edge as they bid for millions of new members through the online marketplaces.
Smaller insurers, like Network Health in Massachusetts, will be selling health plans on exchanges, competing right alongside the likes of UnitedHealth, Aetna, Cigna and WellPoint.

Dangers found in lack of safety oversight for Medicare drug benefit
May,13,2013
By:+Tracy Weber, Charles Ornstein and Jennifer LaFleur

Ten years ago, a sharply divided Congress decided to pour billions of dollars into subsidizing the purchase of drugs by elderly and disabled Americans.
The initiative, the biggest expansion of Medicare since its creation in 1965, proved wildly popular. It now serves more than 35 million people, delivering critical medicines to patients who might otherwise be unable to afford them. Its price tag is far lower than expected.

Why Entrepreneurs Can't Just Hire A 'Finance Guy'
May,08,2013
by:+Staff

There are three ways for aspiring entrepreneurs to equip themselves with the financial expertise necessary to start and grow a business:
You can limit yourself to a simple, slowly growing, cash-based business so you do not need to develop financial skills;
You can learn the financial skills required of an entrepreneur “on the job” through trial and error; or
You can acquire the basic skills through case-based learning, practicing how to make difficult financial decisions, one step at a time, in businesses of increasing complexity, in a way that mimics how entrepreneurs learn in the real world through trial and error, but at a much lower cost.

Optimizing Your Facebook Likes
May,09,2013
By:+Laura Eggleston

Adding a Facebook Like button to your website is easy. Facebook has a handy form that you fill out which gives you a block of code to copy and paste, and you’re done! If that’s too much, there’s plenty of third party plugins that make adding a Like button to your websites as easy as clicking “Install”. This simple process is a big part of why Facebook’s Like initiative has become so successful in the past few years. The Like button is functional right out of the box with little-to-no customization, but that doesn’t mean it’s effective. Too many companies think that adding a Like button is good enough, without bothering to optimize them properly.

Why telemedicine must become 'integral' to mainstream care efforts
May,07,2013
by+Dan Bowman

Telemedicine must move to the forefront of medical efforts in the U.S. for domestic care efficiency and quality improvements to be considered anything better than "marginal," according to an editorial published this month in the journal Telemedicine and e-Health.
Rashid L. Bashshur director of telemedicine at the University of Michigan Health System and the commentary's author, says that now is the time to establish telemedicine as "integral" to care efforts, particularly in conjunction with other information technologies like electronic and personal health records.

Why Rap Genius is exactly what doctors, patients and all of healthcare needs
May,07,2013
by:+Veronica Combs

It’s hard to get past the crazy of the Rap Genius team, probably because it’s such a comprehensive crazy. Recreational use of prescription meds, cultural appropriation, comments that are a mix of hippie and rapper, “If you wanna ball major, you’ve gotta drink the f-ckin kool-aid.”
I don’t know if the three Yale alumi are trolling all of us or opening a window on their love-filled world. Either way, they have built a service that is both cool and helpful which is the only reason I can compartmentalize the crazy and focus on the site.

Economy less of a factor in slow growth for healthcare spending, new studies say
May,06,2013
By:+Melanie Evans

The recession's drag on health spending did not fully explain the recent record slow growth in health spending, according to the latest studies that aim to identify what, if anything, suggests the slowdown may last.
The papers, published in the journal Health Affairs, will be welcome news to those looking for signals that payment and delivery forms are beginning to have an effect on spending, although the researchers stop short of saying so.

Most Wasteful States for Prescription Meds
May,06,2013
by+Staff

The U.S. health care system wasted $418 billion on bad medication-related decisions in 2012. While the entire nation suffers from these costly decisions, they have a disproportionate effect on the poorest states. In fact, nine out of the 10 poorest states rank among the most wasteful, according to research from Express Scripts. Waste stems from using high-priced brand name medications instead of clinically equivalent generics, not taking medications as prescribed, and using more expensive pharmacies than necessary. Here are details on the most wasteful states, as well as the most frugal.

Where do states stand on private coverage of telemedicine? Check out this map
May,06,2013
by:+Stephanie Baum

This useful map, downloaded from the American Telemedicine Association’s Wikipedia site, serves as an interesting social barometer to gauge regional attitudes towards telemedicine. The progression of state legislation permitting private insurers to reimburse telemedicine is growing with Mississippi, Montana and New Mexico becoming the latest states to enact these laws this year.
While it has enjoyed much support in many rural states, particularly in the Midwest and western portions of the country it’s still a mixed bag, as the map indicates. And the state legislation is a patchwork of interpretations as to what telemedicine should and shouldn’t cover.

Only 6 insurers submit plans for Illinois exchange
May,03,2013
By:+Dina Overland

Only six insurers said they want to sell health plans through the Illinois health insurance exchange, sparking concerns that the online marketplaces will lack adequate competition if the trend unfolds throughout the country.
The state of Illinois announced Wednesday that six insurance companies submitted a total of 165 health plans to be available on the state-operated exchange, called the Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace. That's far fewer than the roughly 260 plans offered by 16 different insurers the state predicted last fall, according to the Associated Press.

Retail clinics at tipping pointPharmacies, chains answering demand for access and affordability
May,04,2013
by:+Andis Robeznieks

Before the H1N1 pandemic of 2009, almost no pharmacists administered flu vaccines. But last year, pharmacists working for Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreen Co. administered 5.5 million flu shots among the 9 million vaccines they delivered.
Dr. Jeffrey Kang, Walgreen's senior vice president of health and wellness services and chief architect of the firm's retail expansion, said chain stores are ideally situated for providing primary-care services such as flu shots. “If you had a blank sheet and your goal is to get everyone immunized, what kind of system would you design? One that is easy to get to, open 365 days a year with locations on almost every corner in the country,” said the former chief medical officer at the CMS' predecessor agency. “That's essentially what retail pharmacies are. When corporations see an opportunity and an unmet consumer need, we can move fast.”
