Most Wasteful States for Prescription Meds
May,06,2013
by+Staff

The U.S. health care system wasted $418 billion on bad medication-related decisions in 2012. While the entire nation suffers from these costly decisions, they have a disproportionate effect on the poorest states. In fact, nine out of the 10 poorest states rank among the most wasteful, according to research from Express Scripts. Waste stems from using high-priced brand name medications instead of clinically equivalent generics, not taking medications as prescribed, and using more expensive pharmacies than necessary. The state of Illinois announced Wednesday that six insurance companies submitted a total of 165 health plans to be available on the state-operated exchange, called the Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace. That's far fewer than the roughly 260 plans offered by 16 different insurers the state predicted last fall, according to the Associated Press.

Before the H1N1 pandemic of 2009, almost no pharmacists administered flu vaccines. But last year, pharmacists working for Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreen Co. administered 5.5 million flu shots among the 9 million vaccines they delivered.
Dr. Jeffrey Kang, Walgreen's senior vice president of health and wellness services and chief architect of the firm's retail expansion, said chain stores are ideally situated for providing primary-care services such as flu shots. “If you had a blank sheet and your goal is to get everyone immunized, what kind of system would you design? One that is easy to get to, open 365 days a year with locations on almost every corner in the country,” said the former chief medical officer at the CMS' predecessor agency. “That's essentially what retail pharmacies are. When corporations see an opportunity and an unmet consumer need, we can move fast.”
