Obamacare Customers Skew Older as Young Wait for Shakeout

(Bloomberg) — About 70% of Obamacare’s customers are 35 years of age or older, indicating that U.S. health care overhaul is initially attracting a less healthy population that may drive up insurance premiums.
The federal- and state-run insurance exchanges signed up 2.2 million people for private health plans in the three months ended Dec. 28, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said in a report released on January 13. About 24% were 18- to 34-year-olds, and about one-third were 55 or older.

Personal health, wellness product market to reach $8B by 2018

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has announced the results of a new report which predicts more than an 142 percent increase in personal health and wellness product sales and software and service revenues over the next five years.
During this period, product sales and software and service revenues will see the largest growth, according to the report, generating more than $3.3 billion in revenue in 2013 and growing to more than $8 billion by 2018. While more than 40 million personal health and wellness products are expected to sell in 2013, that figure is expected to rise to more than 70 million by 2018.

The Affordable Care Act -- along with its accompanying enrollment Web site and new taxes and tax breaks -- has opened up a host of questions for the taxpaying public, ramping up the usual levels of pre-tax season taxpayer confusion.
“Forty of the 500 provisions in the ACA amend or add provision to the U.S. Tax Code,” reads a primer from The Income Tax School. “Most of the changes that are to be implemented in 2014 have to do with healthcare coverage [that] requires that each person either have the minimum essential coverage, qualify for an exemption or make a payment when filing his or her federal income tax return.”
