Social Media as a Tool in Medicine
Apr,24,2013
by+Katherine C. Chretien, MD; Terry Kind, MD, MPH

It is an exciting time to practice medicine during our digital “coming of age.” Social media, the freely available Web-based platforms that facilitate information sharing of user-generated content, such as social networking sites, media-sharing sites, blogs, microblogs, and wikis, have transformed the way we communicate as a society. Through community building, message amplification, rapid dissemination, and engagement, social media has changed our interactions with others and, by direct consequence, our relationships. For health care, this represents a veritable social revolution. 1

Where do consumer reviews fit into medical providers & product makers’ strategies?
Apr,23,2013
by:+Deanna Pogorelc

In the absence of a Yelp or Tripadvisor kind of go-to site for ratings and reviews, the healthcare industry admittedly hasn’t seen the same kind of adoption of online consumer feedback. But the theory goes that as healthcare consumers are presented with more choices through insurance exchanges, and as care providers see patient satisfaction tethered to Medicare payments, that kind of consumer feedback is going to become more frequent and important.
In “Scoring healthcare: Navigating customer experience ratings,” PwC’s Health Research Institute surveyed 1,000 people online and interviewed 25 health industry leaders to determine how the industry could make the most existing consumer feedback.

Dual-eligible dilemma States test managed care, but critics question if approach is cost-effective
Apr,20,2013
By:+Jonathan Block

Policymakers are hoping moving Medicare- and Medicaid-eligible seniors and the disabled into managed-care plans will save taxpayers a lot of money through better coordination of care. But as a few state demonstration programs get off the ground, critics are beginning to question just how cost-effective the strategy will be.
“I think they will struggle in the beginning, (but) they will definitely save money, but not the giant projections” some are making, said Charlene Frizzera, a senior adviser with consultancy Leavitt Partners and a former acting administrator for the CMS.

HHS seeks to amend HIPAA to strengthen background checks
Apr,23,2013
by:+Susan D. Hall

Though a Senate bill to expand background checks on firearms sales was defeated last week, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services is examining how HIPAA regulations may keep states from reporting dangerous mental patients to a database used in background checks.
The HHS Office for Civil Rights has issued an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking that seeks public input on how the privacy regulations prevent reporting to the National Instant Criminal Background System (NICS). OCR is looking to address these barriers without discouraging mental health patients from seeking treatment, reports HealthcareInfoSecurity.com.

26M people eligible for health exchange tax credits
Apr,19,2013
by+ Dina Overland

A new report from advocacy group Families USA shows that almost 26 million people will be eligible for tax credits, which will help offset the cost of premiums and enable more consumers to buy health insurance through the new online marketplaces, The Hill's Healthwatch reported. That means more business for insurers when the health insurance exchanges go live later this year. "The tax credit subsidies are a game changer," Families USA Executive Director Ron Pollack said during a conference call with reporters. "They will make health coverage affordable for a huge number of uninsured families who would have been priced out of the coverage they need

Fallout for states rejecting Medicaid expansion
April 22, 2013
by:+Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar

Rejecting the Medicaid expansion in the federal health care law could have unexpected consequences for states where Republican lawmakers remain steadfastly opposed to what they scorn as "Obamacare."
It could mean exposing businesses to Internal Revenue Service penalties and leaving low-income citizens unable to afford coverage even as legal immigrants get financial aid for their premiums. For the poorest people, it could virtually guarantee that they will remain uninsured and dependent on the emergency room at local hospitals that already face federal cutbacks.

So many apps, so little adoption: Docs say most patients who track data do it the old-fashioned way
Apr,19,2013
By:+Deanna Pogorelc

The good news for mobile health app developers is that physicians seem to be open to the idea of reviewing data that patients have tracked themselves. The bad news is that 30 percent of doctors say they don’t have patients who track, and those that do say most patients do it the old-fashioned way.
Manhattan Research’s annual Taking the Pulse survey, conducted online with nearly 3,000 physicians in the first quarter of the year, delivered some interesting insights. First, 70 percent of surveyed physicians said they had at least one patient sharing health measurement data with them.

Advocates fear long delay for rule on home-care worker pay
Apr,18,2013
by:+Ashok Selvam

Those awaiting the Obama administration's decision on whether to guarantee home-care workers at least the federal minimum wage and overtime pay could be in for a long summer.
The Office of Management and Budget's 90-day window to review a final rule on the matter passed without action on April 15. It has been more than a year since President Barack Obama announced he would work toward ensuring workers in the $84 billion-a-year home-care business would receive minimum wage and overtime protections.

50 Small Things You Can Do To Improve Your Customer Service
Apr,18,2013
by+ Greg Meyer

“The Thank You Effect” is an example of a small action that prompts meaningful next steps to measurably improve service in any company. In my experience, there are a number of these small actions that, when evangelized through a support team or through the larger company, can really make a difference on the customer experience.
So I made a list of 50 small things that you can do to measurably improve customer service in your company. I’m not a purist, so some of these things might be “bigger than a bread box” — or need to be broken down into component steps — and aren’t quite ready to be measured on their own. And I do believe that adding only some of these steps will really improve the service culture at your company.

Why Customer Reviews Trump Social-Media Marketing
Apr,18,2013
by:+Michael Fertik

More and more businesses are pouring time and money into tweeting and posting on Facebook. But there's a better way. Sometimes, it seems like it's all social, all the time. But are companies really getting everything they need from the social-media conversation? Absolutely not.
There's ample customer engagement in the social scene, but for many organizations, it's also a loud and noisy cocktail party, with lots of guests all clamoring for the host's attention. It's hard to hear precisely what's important--and there's little mechanism for aggregating information into usable intelligence.

What do seniors need? StartUp Health and AARP collaboration hopes to give startups better insights

So many healthcare entrepreneurs have a story to share about a sick grandparent and how their recent experiences alerted them to certain shortcomings in the healthcare system. And although these epiphanies frequently produce good ideas for so many digital innovations everything from remote monitoring devices to patient engagement tools, the amount of time given over to how each person in will use the device was designed seems to vary. At the same time, everyone recognizes that the number of people in and approaching retirement is substantial. By 2015, people aged 50 and older will make up 45 percent of the population.

Wired witnesses helped feds in Sacred Heart case
Apr,16,2013
by:+Joe Carlson

Federal authorities say they were compelled to work behind the scenes in February to prevent a patient from getting a tracheotomy he didn't need at a Chicago hospital under investigation for Medicare fraud.
The government then rushed to build a case against the executives and physicians allegedly orchestrating the scheme in order to protect other patients from harm, U.S. Attorney Gary Shapiro said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
Shapiro spoke hours after federal agents arrested the hospital's owner and executed sweeping search warrants at several locations looking for documentation of a pattern of doctors referring elderly and indigent patients to Sacred Heart for unneeded but profitable emergency room care and procedures such as tracheotomies, intubations and heavy sedation.

Some states balk at enforcing health law's insurance protections
Mar,20,2013
By:+Kaiser Health News

Florida regulators won’t penalize insurance companies that violate new health law consumer protections that take effect in January but will report them to the federal government, according to an agreement between the state and federal officials.
Citing lack of money and legal authority, Pennsylvania’s top insurance regulator hasn’t decided whether his agency can enforce the provisions, which include some of the most popular elements of the 2010 federal health law, such as requiring insurers to provide coverage to all applicants regardless of their health status, prohibiting insurers from charging more based on gender or health, and greatly limiting what insurers can charge for premiums based on age.

Technology Aided Info Sharing After Boston Marathon Bombings
Apr,16,2013
by:+Staff

Technology helped facilitate communication after two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, FierceHealthIT reports.
How Twitter Helped
Several emergency response teams and medical organizations used Twitter to provide information to the public following the bombings. For example:
The Boston Police Department sent tweets informing followers that officers were working to stabilize the situation;
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Association sent tweets advising concerned individuals to try texting friends and family members in Boston because text messages use less bandwidth than calling;
Tufts Medical Center used Twitter to provide updates on its patient count and to inform potential patients that anyone needing care should use the facility's emergency entrance (Bowman, FierceHealthIT, 4/15).
