Where do consumer reviews fit into medical providers & product makers’ strategies?

In the absence of a Yelp or Tripadvisor kind of go-to site for ratings and reviews, the healthcare industry admittedly hasn’t seen the same kind of adoption of online consumer feedback. But the theory goes that as healthcare consumers are presented with more choices through insurance exchanges, and as care providers see patient satisfaction tethered to Medicare payments, that kind of consumer feedback is going to become more frequent and important.
In “Scoring healthcare: Navigating customer experience ratings,” PwC’s Health Research Institute surveyed 1,000 people online and interviewed 25 health industry leaders to determine how the industry could make the most existing consumer feedback.

Dual-eligible dilemma States test managed care, but critics question if approach is cost-effective

Policymakers are hoping moving Medicare- and Medicaid-eligible seniors and the disabled into managed-care plans will save taxpayers a lot of money through better coordination of care. But as a few state demonstration programs get off the ground, critics are beginning to question just how cost-effective the strategy will be.
“I think they will struggle in the beginning, (but) they will definitely save money, but not the giant projections” some are making, said Charlene Frizzera, a senior adviser with consultancy Leavitt Partners and a former acting administrator for the CMS.

HHS seeks to amend HIPAA to strengthen background checks

Though a Senate bill to expand background checks on firearms sales was defeated last week, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services is examining how HIPAA regulations may keep states from reporting dangerous mental patients to a database used in background checks.
The HHS Office for Civil Rights has issued an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking that seeks public input on how the privacy regulations prevent reporting to the National Instant Criminal Background System (NICS). OCR is looking to address these barriers without discouraging mental health patients from seeking treatment, reports HealthcareInfoSecurity.com.
