1.7 million Americans stuck in Medicaid limbo from backlogged applications

While an unprecedented 6 million people have gained Medicaid coverage since September, mostly as a result of the Affordable Care Act, more than 1.7 million more are still waiting for their applications to be processed—with some stuck in limbo for as long as eight months, according to officials in 15 large states. The scope of the problem varies widely. California, the most populous state to implement the health law’s expansion of Medicaid, accounts for a lion’s share of the backlog with 900,000 applications still pending as of early June. The next biggest pileup is in Illinois, with 283,000 cases, while New York has no backlog at all.Read more:

AMA Pushes Telemedicine Payment Guidelines

At its annual meeting, the American Medical Association approved a list of guiding principles for ensuring the “appropriate coverage of and payment for telemedicine services.”
The principles are meant to foster innovation in the use of telemedicine, protect the patient-physician relationship and promote improved care coordination and communication with medical homes, according to the association. Read More

AHIP Institute 2014: 'Unleash the power of consumers'

The health insurance industry must "unleash the power of consumers" to foster a real relationship between patients and their providers, Mark Ganz, CEO of Cambia Health Solutions, said during the AHIP Institute 2014 opening session today in Seattle. "Health insurance shouldn't be a necessary evil but a trusted partner," he said. To do that, Ganz added, insurers must "utterly transform healthcare" by completely focusing on customers.

AMA telemedicine policy emphasizes in-state licensure, in-person visits

Patient safety and care quality is a primary focus of a telemedicine policy adopted by the American Medical Association this week. It errs on the side of caution in its recommendations, calling for in-person consults in some cases, for example.
The policy calls for a "valid patient-physician relationship" by way of an in-person consultation for services that otherwise would require face-to-face examinations before continuing treatment via telemedicine. Additionally, the policy recommends that doctors delivering telemedicine be licensed in the state where a patient is receiving treatment.  Read More
