Time Warner Cable Business Class apparently wants to take a bigger bite out of the healthcare market, announcing today it’s trying a new “virtual visit” telemedicine solution with Cleveland Clinic.
The offering is part of TWC’s Home Health Monitoring strategy designed to connect healthcare providers to patients in their homes. It will provide infrastructure for secure, encrypted, two-way video conferencing between patients and Cleveland Clinic providers.

Insurers seek expanded role in reform enrollment

With a perfect fix of HealthCare.gov nowhere in sight, some insurers are pushing for a shortcut to help them enroll people in health plans directly by accessing a federal platform that determines subsidy eligibility, according to The New York Times.
The government may reject this idea based on concerns about protecting the privacy and security of citizens' personal data, including financial and tax information and immigration status. A more likely workaround is for insurers to estimate qualifications for subsidies with later verification of the estimates by the federal government, the Times noted.

You've heard the grim prognosis many times before. Unless immediate action is taken, the U.S. supply of doctors will be 91,500 short of the number needed by 2020 and 130,600 physicians short by 2025, according to an Association of American Medical Colleges estimate.
Dr. Atul Grover, chief public policy officer at the AAMC, projects that the U.S. needs to train an additional 4,000 doctors a year to avoid a shortage, given the Obamacare insurance expansion, an aging physician workforce, shorter hours worked by younger physicians, and an aging population.

Insurers could potentially see fewer enrollments if they sell plans on health insurance exchanges in certain states that are working to prevent consumers from learning about and accessing the marketplace.
Although the reform law established the new role of navigators to assist consumers with signing up for exchange plans, many states are blocking navigator efforts, reported The Atlantic. For example, Florida won't allow navigators to work in county health departments, while Texas mandated additional requirements for navigators, including that they must be fingerprinted, pay a state licensing fee and take extra coursework.

In the not-too-distant future, it is quite likely that most interactions between patients and the health care system will happen online, according to researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, who partnered with The Commonwealth Fund to review recent trends in digital health care as well as scientific literature.
Thanks to consumer-directed health apps, electronic health records (EHRs), telemedicine, and the like, researchers say that patients are going to dramatically change the way they interact with their doctors. They report their findings in the November issue of the journal Health Affairs.

The article points to LifeWise Health Plan of Washington, which told members that their existing plan would get cancelled to comply with healthcare reform, but if members did nothing, they would automatically switch to a new plan that was the "closest match" to their current coverage. The letter made no mention of the health insurance exchanges as a place to shop around for other insurance options, TPM noted.
