CMS Grants to Fund Consumer Assistance Services When Buying Insurance

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has awarded grants totaling $67 million to fund “Navigator” positions in state health insurance exchanges.
The grants, to 105 applying entities in 34 states, are to hire and train Navigators, who will aid consumers applying for and selecting insurance through federally-facilitated insurance (built and operated by the feds) and exchanges that states are building in partnership with the federal government. The remaining states are building exchanges on their own with federal funds.

Older patients don’t always understand hospital discharge information

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Older patients may think they understand everything doctors tell them when they are released from the hospital, but a new U.S. study found several gaps in what they remember and areas where instructions could be clearer.
Out of nearly 400 patients discharged from a large academic medical center, 96 percent reported knowing why they had been hospitalized, but only about 60 percent could accurately describe their diagnoses, for instance.

Debate centers on whether exchanges should offer voter registration

Policy and election experts are debating whether the new public insurance exchanges should offer voter registration as well as enrollment in health insurance plans. Some say the exchanges are required by federal law to offer voter registration, while others say the law is unclear and that combining voter registration with insurance sign-ups would add major political difficulties to implementing the already-controversial healthcare reform law. The issue could wind up in court.
