Illinois hospitals cite impact on jobs, economy

Illinois' nearly 50 health systems and more than 200 hospitals contribute $83.4 billion annually to the state's economy, according to a report issued this week by the Illinois Hospital Association. Looking at their financial health however, 39% of Illinois hospitals operated in the red over the last two years, the report noted.
Medicare and Medicaid payment cuts have contributed to Illinois hospitals' financial challenges. Since 2011, the state has seen more than $380 million in Medicaid reductions, while in the past decade, Medicare payments have dropped by about $11 billion.

Mobile in-app ads are growing at about 60 percent a year and are expected to surpass PC online display ad revenue by 2017, according to a report by market researchers IDC and AppAnnie. Mobile app stores (iOS and Google Play) grew revenue by 2.3 times in 2013, while mobile in-app ads grew at 60 percent, outpacing the 50 percent growth for mobile browser ads and the 10 percent growth for PC browser-based ads. About 40 percent of developers use in-app ads in their apps.

Health reform and improved technology are driving interest in telehealth adoption among providers and patients -- and policymakers are starting to get the memo. It's a marked change since just a year ago, when policy momentum around the issue was somewhat stalled. Last March, just 13 states had legislation pending on telehealth.
