Health reform and improved technology are driving interest in telehealth adoption among providers and patients -- and policymakers are starting to get the memo. It's a marked change since just a year ago, when policy momentum around the issue was somewhat stalled. Last March, just 13 states had legislation pending on telehealth. Today, 34 states and the District of Columbia have active telehealth legislation, with 44 statehouse bills addressing improved reimbursement for telehealth services, according to new data from the Center for Connected Health Policy in Sacramento, Calif.

The rate of preventable hospital stays dropped almost 20% from 2003 to 2011, even as large gaps remain between the healthiest and unhealthiest counties in the country, reports the fifth annual County Health Rankings, published today by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

FDA Proposes Medical Device Rule to Simplify Classification Process

The Food and Drug Administration is proposing to amend its regulations governing classification and reclassification of medical devices to conform to provisions in the FDA Safety and Innovation Act (FDASIA). Published today in the Federal Register, the proposed rule would simplify the classification process as Congress directed in the 2012 FDASIA legislation.
