New CMS Tool Facilitates Users' Access to Federal Health Data

On Tuesday, CMS unveiled an online tool that allows researchers to access and manipulate the agency's health care data from a secure desktop computer, Modern Healthcare's "Vital Signs" reports.
Before the launch of the new online system, CMS would field individual data requests and then prepare and send back large, encrypted files to researchers.
The online system -- called the CMS Virtual Research Data Center -- provides access to a variety of federal data files, including Medicare Part A, B and D claims and the Medicare Provider Analysis and Review file.

(Bloomberg) -- The $2.7 trillion U.S. health-care system lags behind other nations in improving its citizens’ health even as spending has doubled, increasing faster than any other industry over the past decade, researchers said.
The rise in costs have been driven primarily by the price of services, drugs and devices rather than higher demand from an aging population, according to a report today on U.S. spending trends in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The analysis also found that two-thirds of spending is for people younger than 65 with chronic illness, though most of the focus on cutting costs has been centered on the elderly.

HealthCare.gov glitches could impact Medicaid enrollment

The 36 states that rely on HealthCare.gov to transmit their residents' applications to Medicaid could wind up delaying their enrollment, Politico reported.
HealthCare.gov has yet to transmit a single Medicaid application to those states for processing, even though enrollment is expected to start on Jan. 1, according to Politico. That could leave an unknown number of applicants eligible for Medicaid without coverage at the start of the year, potentially depriving hospitals of revenue related to their coverage
